Thanks for the encouragement, thanks for your comments, suggestions and ideas. I 
believe it is time to provide more permanent (than an email) summary of what we 
discussed so far. I've added such comment to the JIRA:

Please let me know if I am misinterpreting something. JIRA comment is editable, so I 
should be able to fix it.

I hope we continue our discussions and come up with even better ways to address the 
activeReferenceQueue cleanup problem!
