It would be nice to have to list public, and know whether someone inside
Sun is already working on something, where progress is posted and what
parts need more community help.

This is also why icedtea is so nice. You can easily find the encumbered
parts by looking in the rt/ directory, which provides alternative free
implementation classes, and the patches/ directory which contains
patches of those classes that call proprietary backends so they call the
free alternatives. There is a partial status list in the
icedtea.classpath.org FAQ entry.
