Hacking the OpenJDK

http://openjdk.java.net/guide/ -- it's still a work in progress and if 
you have any questions perhaps you can ask in the guide-discuss list to 
get clarifications.

Yes you can use an IDE to work on OpenJDK changes but your 'IDE' can 
also be "ed" or "vi".  It's up to individual preference.

In the OpenJDK and OpenJDK6 source trees there are some netbeans 
projects that can help you get started.  They are in 'jdk/make/netbeans' 
(if I remember the path right)

The important README's within the source tree are:


They give information about configuring your environment.

The recent discussion you're seeing about Visual Studio is very recent.  
Most of us are on other platforms.  I regularly compile on Ubuntu w/o 
problem.  No need to be on Windows unless that's your cup of tea, of course.

In Elliotte's article, if he'd read the README's beforehand he woulda 
had an easier time ;-)
