Size comparison is almost impossible to do in any reasonable way.
GCC, in particular, has improved its debuginfo in recent years. For
example, we're now starting to do a decent job of tracking variables
in optimized code. Obviously this leads to a far better debugging
experience and equally obviously it leads to larger debuginfo. IMO
the quality of the product is paramount, and the debuggability of
shipped binaries is a quality issue.
