From Tim.Bell at Sun.COM Thu May 10 18:28:57 2007 From: Tim.Bell at Sun.COM (Tim Bell) Date: Thu, 10 May 2007 18:28:57 -0700 Subject: Do we want the new mailing lists to be carried by gmane.org and/or www.mail-archive.com? Message-ID: <4643C6D9.5020500@sun.com> I just received email from flameeyes at gmail.com indicating s/he uses gmane to follow the mailing list traffic and send replies (see below). It that is the case, I'd like to sign up the new mailing lists, and maybe even find a way to communicate that the old lists are ended and won't see any more traffic. To: Tim Bell Hello, Thanks for forwarding my message on the new mailing list. I'm sorry for using an old address, but to post it I used Gmane [1], seems like their address is outdated. I'll now subscribe to the mailing list directly, and will use it until Gmane updates for the new mailing lists. Thanks again, and sorry for the incident. Thanks, Tom Tim From eric at brouhaha.com Thu May 17 18:58:08 2007 From: eric at brouhaha.com (Eric Smith) Date: Thu, 17 May 2007 18:58:08 -0700 (PDT) Subject: annoying web page auto-redirect Message-ID: <34260.71.129.198.222.1179453488.squirrel@ruckus.brouhaha.com> The page at http://www.sun.com/software/opensource/java/ has a link titled "OpenJDK" which points to the URL http://openjdk.dev.java.net/ That URL appears to have interesting and useful information, but it has a meta tag that forces an immediate redirect to a different page: http://openjdk.java.net/ To see more than a momentary glimpse of the former page, I had to use wget to download it, and edit out the redirect. Is that redirect really necessary? The "What you will find here" section of the former page actually seemed useful, and is missing from the latter page. I don't see any equivalent of that section elsewhere; maybe updated info could be put on the new page? Yes, it's necessary - openjdk.dev.java.net web content is now outdated, replaced by openjdk.java.net Nearly all of the content on the old page should be at the new URL, but we could have missed a couple things (it was a hectic couple of weeks!). I haven't yet looked at the page you're referring to, but I will tomorrow, and see who the original author was to see if it should be brought over. thanks! jeff p.s. that's a most excellent email address / domain name you have! > Is that redirect really necessary? For this second Java Freedom Day we moved to the permanent home at openjdk.java.net. I was looking at the main page today and agree, it's a lot shorter than the previous one. - David Herron On May 17, 2007, at 6:58 PM, Eric Smith wrote: > The page at > > http://www.sun.com/software/opensource/java/ > > has a link titled "OpenJDK" which points to the URL > > http://openjdk.dev.java.net/ > > That URL appears to have interesting and useful information, but it > has a meta tag that forces an immediate redirect to a different page: > > http://openjdk.java.net/ > > To see more than a momentary glimpse of the former page, I had to > use wget to download it, and edit out the redirect. > > Is that redirect really necessary?
