One caveat there is that Linux distributions typically lag behind JDK
development by a fair measure, as they usually try to build their
packages from source code.

So the focus of Linux distribution maintainers is usually very different
from that of upstream developers - upstream developers usually have a
manageable set of binary dependencies to make work, so they can more
readily try new things out, relying on the seamless magic of binary
compatibility to make most things just work.

Distributions on the other hand, when faced with toolchain transitions,
tend to have a much larger task on their hand, as they need to re-boil
the ocean from its source molecules, metaphorically speaking. For a
typical herculean effort around a C++ toolchain upgrade, see
https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2015/08/msg00002.html .
