I have sent Sun an update on this bug. This is surely a problem with OpenJDK.

Note, if the "nowarn" flag is not used, it works... or if "-client" is used it

$ /usr/bin/ecj -nowarn  -g -d lib/hotspot-tools             -source 1.5
